Mangkaja Arts Resource Agency (MARA) in Fitzroy Crossing was severely affected by the record-breaking flooding of the Fitzroy River catchment area in January 2023. The flood caused extensive damage to buildings, with an estimated 5% of the artworks in storage destroyed and numerous others needing restoration.
As a hub for five First Nations Language groups of the Great Sandy Desert and West Kimberley River regions, MARA has been a vital centre for sharing stories through art and culture for 31 years.
To provide a much-needed financial boost for the flood-affected art centre and its artists, the Cannery Arts Centre is launching the Rise Above exhibition from 6 pm, 4 May, until 4 June 2023. Featuring more than 60 works from some of Mangkaja's best past, present and emerging artists, it is the biggest collective exhibition from Mangkaja shown in recent times. With accomplished names such as C W Surprise, M Chuguna, M Downs, D Snell, T May, Rosie Tarku King, D Japulija, and Sonia Kurarra. The exhibition will also be available online at www.thecanneryartscentre.myshopify.com.
The Cannery Arts Centre has waived its usual gallery fee, and 80% of sales will go directly to MARA. If purchasing artwork is not an option, supporters can still help by donating to Mangkaja's tax-deductible GoFundMe campaign.
Despite the challenges posed by the flooding, MARA has reopened its studio and is working towards restoring the damaged artworks. However, an estimated $200,000 in damages to buildings and accommodation for staff means that funding is required. Join us in supporting the "Rise Above: Flood Relief for Mangkaja Arts" exhibition and help support the path to recovery for MARA and their artists.
This exhibition has been proudly supported by the Shire of Esperance, Regional Arts WA, Mangkaja Arts Resource Agency and ANKA.
