Sensational Singers at the Cannery

We’re thrilled to continue the Sensational Singers at the Cannery, led by the talented Maggie Tolman, a retired primary school teacher and musical director of the Esperance Community Singers. Maggie is passionate about sharing the joy of music and fostering confidence, creativity, and connection in young singers. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Maggie for generously donating her time to this program.

The choir is open to children in Grades 2 to 6.

📍 Location: Music Room (Yoga Studio) at the Cannery Arts Centre

Under the guidance of Master potter Krystal Obschonka, participants in this 6-week course will learn all of the skills required to prepare and centre clay on a pottery wheel, make cylindrical forms and glaze their work.

Classes are held on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 pm every Wednesday evening.
Space is strictly limited to 6 participants. Adults only.
This course is suitable for all skill levels.
Fees include: one bag of clay, glazes, 4 kiln firings (2 initial bisque firings, and 2 final firings)

Join master potter master Krystal Obschonka for Sunday afternoons working with clay for 6 weeks.

This is an excellent introduction for beginners with Krystal introducing participants to hand building. Participants may try the pottery wheel later on in the course. The course price includes clay, glazes, and firings. Finished products are generally ready for pick up 3 weeks after the course has finished.

Snake Information Night 2025

Join us for a free community workshop in partnership with Fauna for the Future Australia and Key Pest and Weed Control and Swan Veterinary Services. Learn what to do if you encounter a snake at home and how to keep your family, kids, and pets safe.

Presented by Darren and Jenelle, experienced native fauna rescuers, this session focuses on education as the first line of defence for both humans and snakes. Darren has written a new snake awareness book full of information to share with participants and Dominoes Esperance will be providing a bite to eat.

OPEN STUDIO KickArts: Dear Hope Street 6+

Step into a world of imagination and connection with Dear Hope Street, a free, creative project for kids aged 6 and up, proudly funded by IGO. Using Google Street View, children will explore a Hope Street somewhere in the world and write a personalised postcard to its residents.

Part drawing, part writing, and part imagining life in other places, these postcards are like modern-day messages in a bottle. Each card will be numbered, photographed, and placed online at www.dearhopestreet.com before being sent across the globe. Recipients will be invited to respond, turning this into a truly global conversation.

Led by visiting artist Alex Desebrock from Perth (Whadjuk Noongar), this workshop reflects her passion for creating insightful, high-quality arts experiences for children. Known for her “gently radical” approach, Alex connects children’s ideas with adults in meaningful and playful ways.

SOLD OUT KickArts: In the Desert - Carved Line Drawings in Wax 7+

Explore the art of carving line drawings in wax with artist Elaine Morcombe. Participants will learn how to pour wax, carve designs, and enhance their creations by rubbing oil paint into the carved recesses.

This hands-on workshop is designed for ages 7 and up and is perfect for those curious about trying a new artistic technique.

All materials are provided. Participants should wear clothes suitable for crafting and closed-in shoes. Sending a labelled water bottle is also recommended.

Please note that this workshop involves working with hot wax. Elaine is a highly experienced tutor who prioritises teaching safe and responsible handling techniques. We encourage you to consider whether this workshop is suitable for your child before booking.

Fresh Flower Christmas Wreaths Workshop with Jennifer Morcombe

Celebrate the festive season by creating your very own fresh flower Christmas wreath with local florist and flower grower Jennifer Morcombe from Fairymead Flowers. Based at her Pink Lake property, Jen specializes in growing and arranging stunning seasonal blooms. In this 90-minute workshop, you’ll design and craft a vibrant garden wreath using locally grown dahlias and zinnias, perfect for adding a touch of natural beauty to your holiday décor.

No prior experience is needed, and participants will leave with a handcrafted wreath made from fresh, local flowers to take home. This workshop is open to all ages (minimum age 10), making it a fun and festive activity for individuals or families.

Art Handling and Installation

Join Bjoern Rainer-Adamson, the Install Team Leader at John Curtin Gallery, Perth, for an introduction to best practices for unpacking, packing, and handling artworks. He will also provide guidance on pre-planning for handling diverse artworks, including lifting, hanging, and carrying, based on their material, texture, media, size, and weight and will share some of his experiences with challenging display situations and how they resolved them.

This workshop is a great refresher or introduction for beginners to art handling and installation for beginners.

Bjoern is working with the Cannery Arts Centre team to assist with installation of the Esperance Art Awards, providing a practical educational opportunity in art handling and installation.

This project is funded by the State Government of Western Australia through the arts funding and advisory body the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) and the Regional Exhibition Touring Boost (RETB) Regional Public Art Galleries - 2023 to 2027 Funding Round for the Regional Arts Venues Support program (RAVS), funding to support the expansion of annual programs delivered by arts venues in regional Western Australia over a 3-year period. The DLGSC is committed to supporting the activities of key Western Australian arts and cultural organisations and delivers the Royalties for Regions funded Regional Arts and Culture Investment Program (RACIP) under an agreement with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. The RACIP aims to build capacity and contribute to liveability in regional communities by supporting the creative and cultural industries in regional Western Australia.

Perfect for the Esperance region, this workshop will introduce you to the water-conserving benefits of wicking beds, designed to promote healthy plant growth while reducing water usage.

This practical workshop is ideal for gardeners of all experience levels. You’ll learn about the materials required and go through each step of transforming an IBC into a functional wicking bed, from creating a water reservoir to layering soil and selecting the best plants for this system. Silke will also share expert tips on year-round maintenance to help keep your wicking bed flourishing through each season.

Together, we’ll walk towards the Jetty along the footpath, exploring sculptures, murals, and gathering spaces that bring color and character to our community. Stuart will share insights on the stories behind these works and how public art can transform spaces, celebrate local heritage, and spark conversation.

We’ll wrap up the walk with an optional coffee stop, perfect for those who want to continue the discussion. This free event is open to all—everyone in the community is welcome!
