What is the Regional Arts Triennial?
The WA Regional Arts Triennial is a regionally-led capacity building cycle of development to strengthen confidence, capability and interconnectivity within WA’s regional visual arts sector. The purpose is to develop and deliver an ongoing series of interconnected professional development opportunities for regionally based artists, arts-workers and arts organisations that build networks of support and exchange, embed creative career pathways and showcase WA’s regional creative and cultural expertise.
The last iteration Open Borders, the second iteration of the Triennial, originated through the Mycelium project developed by Southern Forest Arts as a response to the impacts of Covid-19. The exhibition series, Open Borders, explored the impact of borders upon the lives of regional WA communities. Artists Lynda Horn, Jamie Coyle, Katie White, Jenelle Griffiths, Natalie McCarthy and Allira Henderson were asked by local curator Marcia Leonard and mentee Sarsby Martin to deconstruct the theme and, with collaboration, produced multi-disciplinary work and installations for [IN]SITE: An Open Borders Exhibition. Marcia Leonard and Lynda Horn had their work chosen to exhibit at the John Curtin Gallery alongside other Open Borders artists from across the State.

Curatorial Theme
Lead curator of the Regional Arts Triennial, Sarah Roots has announced the theme Radical Futures.
Sarah says: For the third iteration of the Regional Arts Triennial we look to the future, building upon the legacy of the past. Standing upon the shoulders of The Alternative Archive, which explored historical cultural capital of the past, and Open Borders, which interrogated contemporary barriers of the present—Radical Futures continues this trajectory, creating aspirational visions of the future for regional Western Australia.
Radical Futures is the core theme for the third Regional Arts Triennial, which will comprise of a group of local exhibitions/performances developed and presented in what is now known as regional Western Australia during 2025. A subsequent selective showcase will be shown in John Curtin Gallery, Perth during 2026 bringing regional futures to metropolitan Western Australia.
